Ben Kingsley is unnamed bad guy in ‘Iron Man 3′

It is official. Ben Kingsley has signed on to play the part of Iron Man’s next adversary in the third installment, which starts shooting next month. However, the character isn’t named. Due to the idea behind the villain’s plans – the spread of a virus through nanobots – it appears that the Mandarin will be sitting this out this time too.

Cinemablend states:

But in revealing the potential casting, insiders confirmed to the trade that the villain will not be The Mandarin and did not reveal who it would be instead. The script for the film was written by Shane Black and Drew Pierce and production is scheduled to get underway next month, exactly one year away from the release date set on May 3, 2013.

I’m not sure why folks are so quick to not say it is Iron Man’s best known classic foe – the character of Mandarin has been alluded to with “The Ten Rings”. Is there something wrong with making the antagonist less magic-based and more tech based?

The rumored story for IM3 is, like the previous films, borrowing off the Extremis issues, so it’s possible Kingsley could be Mallen, although I doubt it. Mallen, however, does have ties to the ‘Super-soldier’ serum and does have confrontations with Nick Fury and Black Widow. That said, I was under the assumption that with the possible exception of Widow, the third film was going to be mostly Avenger free.

In any case, if nothing else…remember Sam Rockwell played a younger Justin Hammer. We’ll know more soon.
Chime in on who you think Kingsly could be playing.

  1. The Ten Rings have been sneaked in both Iron Man movies, a ton of bad guys wore them and the symbol was “easter egged” everywhere. So that might tell you the Mandarin is probably going to be the next villain.

And who in the world would Ben Kingsley be playing besides the Mandarin??

    • They have already expressly said it would not be Mandarin, however we know how these things work in Hollywood.

Megatron was expressly NOT going to be in Revenge of the Fallen.

To be fair, they have said that there will be a nanotechnology storyline that parallels a popular arc in the comics.

      • Honestly, I don’t think it matters if they’re magic or not. I never cared if the Green lantern ring was magic either like the original comics said. Little details like race, energy source of power or origin really doesn’t matter.

What I’m trying to say is that what’s important is how good the movie is, not how much of an accuracy-nazi the writer was when he was reading it off the comic book word for word while writing the script. It was nice in Watchmen but remember, X-MEN FIRST CLASS was an amazing movie.

My primary (and only) concern is aimed towards whether it will be oriented the same way the second one was. I hope they learn from the second one’s mistakes and bring something new to the table. More character depth? IronMan’s drinking problem? A more sinister and smart villain?

I always thought there was a villain inside ironMan. Perhaps this is because I read “Civil War” too many times. Either way Id like to see them go deeper in the next movie and not just make a full-on action movie

  2. The Foo-man-Choo photo posted gives me Mandarin hope. Lets face it, it’s time. last thing I want to see is more metal on metal battles, even Whiplash was made to resemble an Iron Monger style villan in the last one( robot vs robot etc.)…Mix it up people.
